Tottenham move into pole position to sign Ligue 1 midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Angel Gomes as a big update has now emerged over what two of their Premier League rivals are now thinking about a potential move for the Lille star.

The speculation over the future of Gomes has intensified over the last couple of months and shows no signs of slowing down as we edge closer to the summer transfer window.

That does not come as a surprise, given that the midfielder’s current contract with Lille runs out in June and there is no sign of a potential extension.

Reports over recent weeks have claimed that Spurs have begun work on a deal for Gomes. However, Tottenham are not expected to have a free run at the player, with Man United and West Ham also thought to be keen on signing Gomes.

Football Insider have now become the latest outlet to say that Tottenham are ‘very interested’ in the Lille man, with Ange Postecoglou said to be a ‘big fan’ of the 24-year-old.

In fact, the outlet says that Spurs are currently leading the race to sign the midfielder, having now moved to the front of the queue to land the player over recent weeks.

This comes despite the fact that Gomes is also attracting attention from France, Spain and Germany, with many clubs across the continent trying to convince the player to sign on a free transfer.

Huge Man United and West Ham development in Gomes race

Football Insider also back up what we have heard from other sources over recent weeks by stating that West Ham’s efforts to sign the Lille man have been unsuccessful.

Gomes has reportedly turned down a contract offer from the Hammers, who are not expected to follow that up with any new proposals.

Meanwhile, Man United are thought to be prioritising other signings for the moment, thus clearing the route for Tottenham Hotspur to launch an assault to sign the England international.
