Opinion: Five free agents Tottenham should look at this summer

0 5

While big-money signings always grab headlines, there’s value to be found in the free-agent market. Here are five players Spurs should consider signing without spending a penny on transfer fees.

The summer transfer window is expected to be a busy one for the Lilywhites. A significant number of players could be on their way into the club, as well as out of it.

We have already highlighted ten players we think Tottenham Hotspur should part ways with this summer.

We have also given our thoughts on five players Spurs should target, particularly if they are looking to shop from Bournemouth.

However, transfers are not always about splashing big money—some quality players are available for free, and this summer is no different. Here are five free agents Spurs should seriously consider.

Jonathan David would bolster Tottenham’s attack

David is a strong forward who would significantly bolster Spurs’ attacking line. Tottenham have been left thin up front this season due to injuries, particularly to Richarlison, who has managed just 14 appearances, with six being starts at the time of writing.

With Tel considered more suited to the wings, Tottenham are in desperate need of another forward, and David fits the bill.

He has the pedigree, given his performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and could provide much-needed depth.

Angel Gomes available as a free midfield option

If you have been following SpursWeb’s coverage, you will know that Gomes is a player Spurs have been linked with for some time and are even labelleda favourite to sign him.

Of course, like David, he is available on a free transfer, meaning Tottenham can pick him up without paying a fee to his club.

With Tottenham expected to prioritise midfield reinforcements this summer, adding Gomes as a squad option for free would be a smart piece of business.

Kyle Walker-Peters could return to Tottenham

An ex-Spurs man, but with his contract expiring, Tottenham could do with a signing like him. The reason is clear—we do not have enough cover at full-back.

The current options include Pedro Porro and Djed Spence, who is versatile enough to play both on the right and left, as well as Destiny Udogie.

However, one or two injuries in that position, and Spurs’ season could be in shambles. Of course, Ben Davies and Archie Gray can do a job there, but extra cover is essential.

Jonathan Tah is an ideal replacement for Cristian Romero

If the rumours are true that Cristian Romero wants out of Tottenham to play Champions League football, then Spurs need a replacement.

Tah, a centre-back with experience at the highest level, fits the bill perfectly. Just like Romero, he knows what it takes to win trophies.

The Leverkusen man was integral to Xabi Alonso’s side when they came close to a historic treble last season, eventually securing the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Tyrick Mitchell offers defensive depth for Tottenham

If Spurs decide against signing Walker-Peters, then Mitchell is another full-back up for grabs. A left-back who could push Udogie for a starting spot is needed at the club, and Mitchell would do just that.

If Tottenham were to bring him in, he would provide competition for Udogie, while Spence could push Porro for a place on the right.

Of course, one thing remains certain—Spurs need extra full-back cover, and if there are free agents with Premier League experience available, they simply have to take advantage.
