Tottenham lower Cristian Romero valuation amidst Atletico Madrid interest
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to sell Cristian Romero for a much lower fee after Atletico Madrid stepped up their pursuit of the Spurs vice-captain.
Since it first emerged a little over a week ago that Atletico Madrid had contacted Romero about a transfer this summer, the speculation over the centre-back’s future has gone into hyperdrive.
Over recent days, some sources have claimed that Romero is willing to leave Tottenham this summer in search of Champions League football.
Meanwhile, it has also been suggested by a few outlets that Spurs will cash in on Romero if he does not sign a new contract before the end of the season.
Tottenham ready to accept a lower fee for Cristian Romero
Journalist Ben Jacobs has now confirmed that Atletico have shown the most concrete interest in the 26-year-old and suggested that a switch to the Metropolitano Stadium is a ‘concrete possibility’ for the centre-back.
He also explained that while Tottenham Hotspur had previously valued Romero at £60m, they are ready to accept a lower fee for their vice-captain this summer.
Jacobs said on GiveMeSport’s ‘Market Madness’ show: “I can tell you that Atletico Madrid have put the Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero on their list of options this summer and Tottenham’s position on a sale has now softened, so if we go back to the winter, Spurs were thinking of extending Romero.
“Now, as he heads towards two years left on his contract, Tottenham are prepared to sell and this is a move driven by Diego Simeone and I can tell you that Atletico Madrid have already made contact with the Romero camp and they’re looking to pay something in the region of €40 million or £33 million.
“Now, Tottenham paid 43 million quid, so that’s €50 million and about six months ago when he was also being linked with Real Madrid, the price was about £60 million, or €70 million.
“Now, it’s likely to be lower than that. But instead of it being Real Madrid, even though they are looking for a centre-back, my understanding is Atletico Madrid are the most serious suitor for Romero and there is a concrete possibility that Tottenham may be prepared to sell.”
Tottenham have identified ideal Cristian Romero replacement
As reports continue to link the Argentine with an exit from N17, it has been suggested by some sources that Spurs have already identified a potential replacement ahead of the summer.
It has been claimed that Tottenham see Marc Guehi as the ideal option to replace Romero. After missing out on a deal for the Crystal Palace man in January, the Lilywhites have been backed to try again to sign the England man this summer.
