Following their actions in the UEFA Champions League match: Tough sanctions expected for Vinicius and Mbappé

0 8
Any suspensions would be a significant blow to Real Madrid, especially with the team competing for titles in La Liga and the Champions League. The absence of key players like Mbappé or Vinícius could severely impact the team's attacking prowess.

The aftermath of the Champions League Round of 16 second-leg match between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid continues to generate controversy. Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout, following a heated debate over Julián Álvarez’s alleged double touch during his spot-kick.

The tension was palpable throughout the match, resulting in several viral images. These included Rüdiger making a throat-slitting gesture towards Atlético Madrid fans, Vinicius addressing the home crowd on multiple occasions, Mbappé seemingly touching his genitals in front of the Atlético supporters, and Ceballos giving the middle finger.

According to Rubén Uría, Atlético Madrid sent all these images to UEFA, requesting an investigation into the alleged misconduct of the Real Madrid players.

The European governing body responded yesterday, confirming the launch of an investigation into the events at the Metropolitano stadium.

“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández and Vinícius Júnior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF played on 12 March 2025. Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course,” UEFA stated in a release.

Potential sanctions for Real Madrid players

With the investigation underway, fans are eager to know what sanctions the four players in the spotlight could face.

The key lies in Article 15 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, which outlines potential sanctions for player misconduct.

Point 1.a states that players can be suspended for a specific match or period for various reasons, including “insulting players or others present at the match,” “unsporting conduct,” or “provoking spectators.

Furthermore, point 2 clarifies that suspensions can be combined with fines or community service related to soccer. It also states that suspensions can be reduced, extended, or even applied to all competitions if the circumstances warrant it.

Possible scenarios and outcomes

The range of potential sanctions is wide, depending on the severity of the offenses and UEFA’s interpretation of the evidence. A first-time offense of “provoking spectators” could result in a one-match ban, while more serious offenses like “insulting players” could lead to longer suspensions.

UEFA also has the power to impose fines and order players to participate in community service activities. In extreme cases, the governing body could even extend the suspensions to all competitions, meaning the players would be banned from playing in domestic league and cup matches as well.
