Craig Breslow Offers Update On Red Sox Ace Extension Talks

The Red Sox opened their 125th American League season in Texas against the Rangers at Globe Life Field with their new ace Garrett Crochet taking the ball for Boston.

After Crochet was acquired by the Red Sox for a package of prospects in December, the focus immediately shifted to when an extension would be reached between the southpaw and Boston.

Before the revamped roster was introduced before the first pitch, Red Sox chief baseball operator Craig Breslow, who joked with reporters that he was a reliever during his playing days and understands how seriously a starting pitcher takes their routine, offered an update on where the extension talks with Crochet stand entering the season.

“Out of respect for Garrett and the conversations, those will remain between us,” Breslow told reporters. “Where we are today is just super excited that we have a legitimate ace that’s going to take the mound. We’re going to see dominant stuff. I’ve maintained throughout the offseason that it’s a really important part of our strategy to identify players who can be part of the long-term success here. When we find those, we’re going to do everything we can to keep them here.

“Right now, Garrett is getting ready to throw the first pitch for the 2025 season. I think he has been outspoken about wanting to table conversations and be able to focus on the season. We absolutely want to respect that, and we’re super excited about what he’s gonna do for us.”

Crochet last week revealed he established an Opening Day deadline for extension conversations, as he doesn’t want any distractions once the games begin. He struck out Marcus Semien, the first batter he faced in his Red Sox debut.
