Djed Spence told what he has to do to earn his dream England call-up

0 3

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have weighed in on whether Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence deserves an England call-up and what he has to do to make it happen.

Seventeen Spurs players have jetted off to represent their countries, while 13 others remain at Hotspur Way, working hard behind the scenes.

Among those staying back, Djed Spence stands out. The full-back has been turning heads with his performances, particularly in February, where Djed’s impressive displays earned him a nomination for Player of the Month.

Despite this, Thomas Tuchel opted against selecting him for England duty. Of course, with the Three Lions’ full-back spots stacked with quality, breaking into the England squad was never going to be easy for Spence.

Lineker and Shearer’s verdict on Spence’s England chances

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker and Shearer shared their thoughts on Djed Spence’s chances of making the England squad.

Lineker was full of praise but realistic about the competition ahead: He’s doing really well. I think he’s got to do it probably for a longer period of time before he breaks into the squad. And we’ve suddenly had an emergence of strongly, I suppose, decent full-backs now at present.

“Even on the left now, you’ve got, obviously, Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall at Newcastle who will probably get an opportunity at some point – he’s been brilliant for you lot, Alan, hasn’t he?”

Shearer echoed the sentiment: I agree. I think it’s really, really unfortunate that we’re really, really strong in those positions. I mean, Kyle Walker came on.

“You’ve got Reece James, you’ve got Trent, and as you said, two really good left-backs now, so I think we’re all okay in that position.

“But he’s having a good season, you know? And I think it’s right that he actually gets a mention.

“But whether he would get in ahead of those that we mentioned, I’m not sure. Not yet, anyway.”

Lineker concluded: “No, but he’s making progress. And he’s started to become a regular in the Tottenham side and that’s the start, and you see where he goes from there.”

Djed Spence’s England hopes: A Tottenham waiting game?

Indeed, breaking into the England squad is no easy feat, especially with the talent pool available at right-back. However, it’s far from an impossible task.

If Spence keeps his head down, maintains his form, and produces consistent performances, he could force his way in.

Kyle Walker, at 34, may not have too many international tournaments left in him. When that spot eventually opens up, Spence needs to ensure he’s in pole position to take it.

For now, patience and persistence will be key, qualities that Spence has already shown during his time at Spurs.
