South Korea endured a frustrating evening against Jordan at home on Tuesday, but Tottenham fans will be delighted to hear that Heung-min Son made a key contribution for his side.

With the international break now winding down, players from around the world will start returning to Hotspur Way over the next couple of days as Ange Postecoglou’s men start preparation for a big London derby against Chelsea next week.

Given the challenges that Tottenham Hotspur have endured this season, Heung-min Son would have been hoping for a change of fortunes when he put the South Korean shirt back on, but that was not to be.

The Taegeuk Warriors were held to draws by both Oman and Jordan over the past few days, but the Spurs captain did make a key contribution in the latter.

Heung-min Son picks up assist but South Korea have work to do

South Korea needed to win one of their two games against Oman and Jordan to book their place in next year’s World Cup, but they were unable to accomplish that.

The Korans made the perfect start at home against Jordan on Tuesday, taking the lead in five minutes as Lee Jae-Sung rose to meet Son’s brilliant in-swinging corner from close range.

However, Mahmoud Al-Mardi’s deflected strike drew the away side back level at the half-hour mark, and that is how the scores stayed until the final whistle, with Hong Myung-bo’s unable to break down a resolute Jordan defence.

Son bemoans the lack of improvement

This result means that the Koreans still have work to do to book their place in an 11th consecutive World Cup. Although they still sit top of Group B, they now need to avoid defeat against Iraq away in June to ensure they are part of the main event in the United States next summer.

Son was not happy with his side’s performance, insisting that they have not shown any improvement of late.

The South Korean captain said following the 1-1 draw (via Sportstar): “When we’re at home, we’re supposed to enjoy the best playing conditions possible, but things have not improved at all.

“I know we can play better than this, but when conditions on our home soil get in the way, then I wonder where we should get our home-field advantage.”
