Patriots Legend Thinks Stefon Diggs Will Be Hungry Joining New England
The New England Patriots made a massive upgrade to their wide receiver corps by reportedly signing Stefon Diggs to a three-year deal.
From retired receiver Chad Johnson to ESPN and Dan Orlovsky, many have weighed in on New England signing the four-time Pro Bowler and Patriots legend Julian Edelman is the latest to chime in.
“I like Stefon Diggs in New England because Stefon Diggs is still pissed off at the Bills,” Edelman told former teammate Rob Gronkowski on the “Dudes On Dudes” podcast. “There’s gonna be hunger and there’s gonna be urgency and there’s gonna be a fire under his ass in the meeting room when he’s in New England at practice — which they could use a little fire under their ass in that receiver room.”
Edelman alluded to the alleged diva personality that has followed Diggs but was quick to point out the former Buffalo and Houston Texans star should be motivated when he arrives in New England.
“No one ever second-guesses how hard he works and the amount of work that he puts into his craft,” Edelman said. “So, if you’re getting a motivated Stefon Diggs, that could be really beneficial to the young football players in that young football room that they call the receiver room in New England.
“They have a lot of young football players there. It’d be really good for these younger guys to be able to see how a professional works daily. How a professional prepares daily. How a professional takes care of his body. … They need a little veteran leadership in that room.”
The three-time Super Bowl champion reiterated that having Diggs fueled by his anger at the Bills will only help him stay motivated with the Patriots.
“It could be he’s interested in going to New England because he’s pissed at Buffalo,” Edelman said. “And he thinks (the Bills) are a little down right now, and he wants to go show them that, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go to the enemy New England Patriots, and I’m gonna beat you.’ Maybe he does that.”
Diggs established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the game during his four seasons with the Bills, earning a Pro Bowl nod in each campaign. Diggs caught 445 passes for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns, building an enviable connection with quarterback Josh Allen.
The Patriots would like to see that connection build between Diggs and second-year signal-caller Drake Maye.
