Italian media deliver bad news for Tottenham on Destiny Udogie
Tottenham fans may not like what is being said about Destiny Udogie after Italy’s latest defeat to Germany in the Nations League, with the left-back coming in for scathing criticism for both of his performances over the international break.
Udogie has not come close to returning to the levels he showed last season since recovering from his big injury at the start of this campaign.
The Italian has been plagued by inconsistency and many Spurs fans will feel that he is no longer in the club’s strongest eleven, particularly given that most of Djed Spence’s best performances have come at left-back.
Udogie was blasted by some Italian outlets last week for his performance in Italy’s 2-1 loss to Germany in the first leg of the Nations League quarterfinal.
The Tottenham man has not managed to do any better in the second leg, coming in for even more stinging criticism for his latest display.
Destiny Udogie deemed not good enough for the highest level
Italy did manage a respectable 3-3 draw at the Westfalenstadion on Monday, which meant that the Germans progressed 5-4 on aggregate, but Udogie had a very tough evening in Dortmund.
All three of the home side’s goals came in the first half, with the Tottenham man’s defending leaving a lot to be desired.
Several Italian outlets have now suggested that Udogie simply does not offer enough going forward or defensively to warrant a place in the Azzuri eleven.
TuttoMerctoWeb gave the defender 5/10 and wrote: “He defends badly, attacks worse. In his area, Germany could literally do what they want.”
Meanwhile, CalcioMercato rated him just a 4.5/10, writing: “Apart from the good cross at the start of the second half for Frattesi, who wastes it, he repeats the terrible performance of Thursday. He doesn’t seem ready for this level yet.”
Udogie was handed a 5.5/10 by Sky Sport Italia, who said about his performance: “He certainly puts exuberance and generosity into it, with the desire to push forward on his flank. But when it comes down to it, he does very little on the offensive level and suffers Kimmich who dominates on his side in the first.”
Udogie’s poor displays should concern Tottenham
Given that Luciano Spalletti used an attack-minded 3-5-2 system in both legs against Germany, it seemed like the ideal opportunity for Udogie to shine.
The Tottenham Hotspur man’s attributes make him an ideal wing-back, but yet, he looked extremely devoid of confidence in both matches.
On current form, it looks like Destiny Udogie rather than Pedro Porro might be the one to miss out on Tottenham’s starting line in the upcoming crunch Europa League games.
