Mookie Betts Shares Unsettling Details About Mysterious Illness

Mookie Betts — and his doctors — remain in search of answers.

Betts currently is dealing with an unspecified stomach issue that has caused him to lose 25 pounds in a matter of weeks. The Dodgers superstar, who did not play in Los Angeles’ Tokyo series last week, currently is not able to keep down solid foods.

“I don’t think anybody really knows … My body’s just kind of eating itself, and so it’s hard to not fuel it,” Betts told reporters Sunday, as transcribed by MassLive. “Every time — literally, every time — I fuel my body, I throw it up and I don’t know what to do about it.”

Betts added: “My vitals, everything has come back clean. Blood tests, everything has come back really, really clean, healthy. So I guess it’s just something with my stomach being really aggravated. So I’m just starting some new medicine now to try and calm my stomach down.”

The former Boston Red Sox star, who admitted he’s “scared to eat” at this moment, has seen some health improvements of late, including being able to keep down liquid foods like smoothies. However, Betts still is well beneath his listed playing weight of 180 pounds.

Thus, it’s unclear if the eight-time All-Star will be able to suit up Thursday when the reigning World Series champions play their home opener.
