11 duels won, 4 recoveries, 1 assist: £21m United star was terrific on Int'l duty, Amorim will be thrilled
Portugal progressed to the last four of the Nations League after an impressive 5-2 win over Denmark in the second leg of the quarter-final yesterday.
Roberto Martinez’s side were trailing 1-0 after the first leg on the road, but they managed to make a terrific comeback at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Sporting CP star Francisco Trincao was the stand-out player. The 25-year-old, linked with Manchester United, bagged a brace coming off the bench.
From United’s point of view, the game involved Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu.
We were particularly impressed with Dorgu, who started from the left-back position for the Danes.
The 20-year-old had 62 touches in 97 minutes. He won a stunning 11 duels in the game, making five clearances, four recoveries and three interceptions.
Dorgu, valued at £21 million by Transfermarkt, played higher up the pitch after Victor Kristiansen’s introduction during the second half.
The Dane capitalised on a defensive mistake from Manchester City’s Ruben Dias to put the ball on the plate for Eriksen to score in the 76th minute (2-2).
The visitors went 3-2 up on aggregate but could not hold on. Trincao came off the bench to equalise before putting Portugal into the lead in extra-time.
Goncalo Ramos put the game beyond doubt with Portugal’s fifth goal to seal a 5-3 aggregate win.
Dorgu has proved a fantastic signing for United since his arrival from Lecce last winter.
Manager Ruben Amorim will undoubtedly be pleased after his solid performance for Denmark.
The Red Devils need the defender to replicate the same from left wing-back as they look to finish as high as possible in the Premier League standings.
The club also have Champions League football to play for. They must win the Europa League to secure a berth in the elite European competition next term.
