Opinion: Tottenham could have an Alejo Veliz swap deal on the cards this summer
A swap deal involving Alejo Veliz might potentially be on the cards of Tottenham Hotspur this summer after it emerged that the Lilywhites are stepping up their pursuit of a young midfield starlet.
Veliz has not progressed the way Tottenham would have hoped for during his two loan spells in La Liga.
The striker hardly got a look in at Sevilla last season and while he has got more opportunities at Espanyol, he has failed to set the world alight, having scored just one league goal so far this season.
It was reported last week that Veliz has emerged as River Plate’s top target, with the Argentinean giants thought to be ready to offer the centre-forward a route back to his home country.
A fresh update about Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans for the summer has raised the possibility of a swap deal involving Veliz.
Tottenham’s interest in Franco Mastantuono opens door for Alejo Veliz swap deal
It is now being reported that Spurs have set their sights on River Plate starlet Franco Mastantuono, who is making waves back in Argentine football.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who is winning many admirers with his displays at the El Monumental, is thought to have also attracted the attention of Man Utd, but it is the Lilywhites who have been named as the more likely destination for the teenager.
With River Plate keen on Veliz, this potentially opens the door for a swap deal between the two clubs which would see the Spurs striker heading to Buenos Aires and Mastantuono heading to London.
We will have to wait and see if Tottenham try and use the former Rosaria Central man as a sweetener to help them land the young midfielder on a discount.
Will Spurs consider cashing in on Veliz?
Given Veliz’s struggles since his move to London, Tottenham may be tempted to consider cutting their losses on the striker if they receive a decent offer for him this summer.
However, the Argentine forward is still very young and has not really been handed enough opportunities to impress in his loan spell, which is why Spurs may be leaning towards giving Veliz one last chance by sending him on loan to a Championship side next season.
