Tottenham handed £12.5 million blow ahead of summer transfer window
It has now been confirmed by various sources that Bryan Gil has been ruled out for up to four months, and this potentially gives Tottenham a huge headache going into the summer.
Bryan Gil has successfully undergone surgery on the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee and is expected to be out for four to five months recovering.
We previously relayed a report from Marca which explained that it was at Tottenham Hotspur’s insistence that the 24-year-old went under the knife.
However, the same update explained that Girona are now unlikely to activate their €15m (£12.5m) option to buy Bryan Gil in the summer as he will not be fit until at least midway into their pre-season campaign.
Will Tottenham be able to find a buyer for Gil this summer?
Gil will enter the final year of his deal at Spurs this June, which means that this summer’s window is the Lilywhites’ final opportunity to get a decent fee for the winger.
However, the North London club would have been hoping that Girona take up the £12.5m option. If they are not going to do that, Spurs will have their work cut out in finding a buyer who can pay that sort of fee.
While there is no doubt that a few La Liga clubs will be interested in Gil, the financial predicament of most Spanish teams means that they are unlikely to shell out a big fee for a player who is into the final year of his deal.
Tottenham may thus have little choice but to lower their asking price, with the winger in a powerful position due to his contract situation.
Could Spurs consider cashing in on another on-loan youngster?
Gil is not the only on-loan Tottenham attacker who is being linked with a move away from Hotspur Way this summer.
We have heard over recent days that River Plate are plotting a move for Alejo Veliz, who has struggled to make an impact on loan at Espanyol this season.
It will be interesting to see if Spurs are tempted to cut their losses on the Argentine if they do receive a decent offer for him this summer.
