Here’s Updated Look At Red Sox’s Opening Day Second Base Contenders

The Boston Red Sox still have a position battle to finalize in the coming days before the team starts the 2025 season on Opening Day in Texas against the Rangers.

Kristian Campbell, Vaughn Grissom and David Hamilton make up the candidates in that running. Campbell entered camp as the likely option, and in recent reporting from MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam, that reportedly is still the case for the Red Sox.

With that said, there’s still reason to do due diligence and understand the impact of Grissom and Hamilton before Boston officially makes that choice by March 27.

With just one week remaining in spring training, here’s an updated look at the second base competition for the Red Sox.

Kristian Campbell
2025 Spring Training: .158 AVG, .500 OPS, 6-for-38
Campbell had a very difficult start to spring training before he earned his first hit and started to turn a corner. Along with his “Big Three” partners in Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, Campbell homered in showcase fashion during MLB’s Spring Breakout Game.

Campbell also turned heads with a highlight-reel slide for a double for the Red Sox on St. Patrick’s Day.

Vaughn Grissom
2025 Spring Training: .176 AVG, .535 OPS, 3 RBI, 6-for-34
Grissom’s health makes or breaks his potential in 2025. Illness and injuries took his chance away from him to consistently hold the second base job last season after he joined the Red Sox from the Chris Sale trade.

He’s still likely to start this season in Triple-A Worcester.

David Hamilton
2025 Spring Training: .239 AVG, .787 OPS, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 5 SB, 11-for-46
Hamilton sparked the team with pure speed on the bases last year and improved his defense away from shortstop. His impact isn’t lost by Boston’s decision-makers and Alex Cora certainly defended his candidacy with the Red Sox.
