How Tottenham could be one of seven English teams in the Champions League

0 7

Tottenham Hotspur still have hope of qualifying for the Champions League via the Europa League this season, and they could be joined in Europe’s elite competition by six other Premier League clubs next season.

Spurs are out of the running for a top-four finish this season, with the Lilywhites currently sitting in 14th place, 15 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are thus expected to put all their focus on winning the Europa League after reaching the quarterfinal of the competition last week, with the winners of the competition being handed a direct passage into the Champions League.

It turns out that Spurs could be joined by a host of other English sides in the premier competition as we could potentially see a record number of teams from the island nation qualify for the tournament.

How seven Premier League teams could qualify for the Champions League

Football.London point out that while a top-four finish will guarantee Champions League qualification, even a fifth-place finish is expected to be enough.

The Premier League currently tops the UEFA coefficient rankings with 108.8 points, which means that they are extremely likely to be awarded an extra spot in the competition.

The top five Premier League teams could be joined by two other teams in the Champions League depending on what happens in the knockout stages in Europe over the next two months.

They could be joined by one of Tottenham or Man United if one of them go all the way in the Europa League, while Aston Villa could be the seventh team to qualify if they win the Champions League this term despite finishing out of the top five.

Winning the Europa League would be a game-changer for Tottenham

Not only would winning the Europa League end Tottenham’s desperation for silverware and perhaps open the floodgates in terms of trophies, but it will be crucial for the club’s summer rebuild.

It is going to be next to impossible for Postecoglou’s men to attract world-class talent to the club if they do not have Champions League football to offer.

Tottenham’s medium and long-term health as a club thus depends a great deal on whether they can go all the way and lift the trophy in Bilbao.
