Micky van de Ven reveals new fitness regime at Tottenham to help his hamstrings
Micky van de Ven has now opened up on his hamstring woes at Tottenham, the re-injury he suffered, and why Ange Postecoglou decided not to risk him over the past couple of months.
After a long wait, Spurs fans finally saw Van de Ven’s name in the starting eleven in the second leg against Alkmaar last week, with the Lilywhites instantly looking a lot more solid at the back after the Dutchman’s return.
The 23-year-old played around an hour before being replaced by Archie Gray and Tottenham fans would be delighted to see him come through the game unscathed.
The centre-back has now opened up about being sidelined for so long and has explained why Postecoglou decided against risking him.
Micky van de Ven makes admission about Tottenham return
The centre-back admitted that the last few months have been extremely challenging for him and expressed his delight at finally being able to return to the pitch.
The former Wolfsburg man also revealed that he did not feel completely comfortable after playing one half of football against Elfsborg back in January, explaining why the coaching and the medical staff decided to exercise caution with his injury.
Van de Ven said (via The Standard): “It’s been really difficult, it has been a long time. My first [injury] happened against City and then against Chelsea a re-injury and afterwards some little problems. It was really tough but I’m really happy to be back and just make sure I’m staying fit now for the rest of the season.
“I’m really excited and happy to be back. I came through the 60 minutes feeling well. I feel good so hopefully, I can build up from this.”
Speaking about his 45 minutes against Elfsborg, the defender said: “It was just some problems and I didn’t really feel comfortable, that was the thing. The gaffer and the medical team made a decision to manage me for training and match minutes to make sure I was 100 per cent fit when I come back.
“I was 100 per cent fit for sure but after the Elfsborg game I didn’t really feel comfortable [in] myself but I wanted to keep pushing. Then they made the decision to keep me back to make sure 100 per cent I was good.”
Van de Ven reveals help from specialist to address hamstring issues
Some people have claimed over recent months that Tottenham should consult experts to change Van de Ven’s running style in order to reduce the risk of hamstring injuries.
The Spurs man explained that it is something he has worked on in the past as well and confessed that his expert advice has proven valuable.
When asked about changing the way he sprints, Van de Ven said: “Of course, you need to [work on] your running technique and I also did it at [former club] Volendam.
“I know what to do and that’s the thing. But now also [the medical staff] help me. Specialists from outside Spurs came in to help me with my hamstring and help me with different things, so it’s really good to have them here.”
When asked if he was confident he could start three games a week if necessary, the centre-back added: “I feel good, so we’re going to see what happens now.”
