Why Red Sox Should Be Encouraged By Early Alex Bregman Trend

The Boston Red Sox knew Alex Bregman’s offseason signing would improve the team’s leadership, defense and right-handed balance in the lineup.

One area to watch with Bregman early on is his power. He’s improved in that stat since 2022 and hit 26 home runs with the Houston Astros last season, which still would’ve been good for third-most on the Red Sox in 2024. But a contract like Bregman’s demands more pop in the order between Rafael Devers and Triston Casas.

Bregman went off in 2019 with a career-best 41 home runs for Houston, though his OPS fell below. 800 last season. The Red Sox signed him with intentions for a bounce-back campaign in hitter-friendly Fenway Park where his career numbers are exceptional.

Boston should be intrigued by Bregman’s early swings in spring training at the similar-dimensioned JetBlue Park. The Red Sox infielder launched his third home run of the spring Saturday and continues to do damage, albeit in exhibition reps.

You can watch his latest long ball here.

Obviously, these swings don’t matter if Bregman doesn’t produce early for the Red Sox, but Boston should already be encouraged by the quality of the at-bats and the play of Bregman’s swing in Fenway-like dimensions.
