Tottenham fans react to strange Thomas Tuchel England squad announcement
Tottenham Hotspur fans were left frustrated after Djed Spence was snubbed from England’s latest squad, with many questioning the decision given his recent form.
Supporters had been eagerly awaiting England boss Thomas Tuchel’s announcement for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and the German boss has finally revealed his debut squad.
For Tottenham Hotspur, Dominic Solanke earned a call-up but both Djed Spence and James Maddison were left out, sparking debate among the Spurs faithful.
Spence, in particular, had strong claims for a place in the squad, having put in a string of standout performances in recent months.
Djed was even nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award in February, highlighting his growing influence.
Tottenham fans left baffled by Djed Spence England omission
Given his form, Spence has every reason to feel disappointed, and Tottenham fans made their feelings clear on social media. Many questioned Tuchel’s selection, pointing to the inclusion of more experienced but arguably out-of-form players.
One fan vented: “I mean, what is that squad? Jordan Henderson? Kyle Walker? Marcus Rashford?”
Another was just as frustrated: “I want Tuchel to personally tell me what more Spence has to do.”
Some, however, saw the silver lining, with one supporter stating: “Gutted for them personally, but as a Spurs fan, I am relieved—less pointless games for them.”
Another added perspective: “No problem. We cannot get annoyed at Romero being called up and then get upset when Spence does not. Let him rest at home for a couple of days.”
Darren summed up the situation: “A matter of time before Djed gets a call-up. Madders deserves a call-up too over some others picked. But with the season we have had, having them with Ange training for Frankfurt and not risking injury playing for England is not a bad thing from a Spurs perspective.”
Is an England call-up just a matter of time for Spence?
While many Tottenham fans are disappointed, there is a sense that this is not the end of the road for the Spurs full-back. With Spurs still fighting for silverware in the Europa League, there will be plenty of opportunities for him to showcase his talent. If he continues to impress, the England call-up will come.
It is also worth noting that this is Tuchel’s first squad, and the England boss may have opted for familiarity to maintain squad harmony.
With Kyle Walker entering the latter stages of his career, Spence’s time could be just around the corner. The full-back just needs to keep his head down, maintain his form, and wait for his opportunity.
