Why Patriots Champion Gave Approval Of New England’s ‘Glue Guy’ Addition

The New England Patriots kept most of their focus on upgrading their defense on the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period.

But New England did make a few additions to its offense and one of those reported signings got a big stamp of approval from a Patriots Super Bowl champion.

Jason McCourty, who played for the Patriots for three seasons from 2018-20, understands what veteran wide receiver Mack Hollins can bring to his new team — Hollins reportedly agreed to a two-year, $8.4 million deal with New England. McCourty and Hollins crossed paths for one season with the Miami Dolphins in 2021.

And to McCourty, Hollins’ importance goes well beyond the stat sheet.

“No surprise he stays in the division. Teams that play against him see the value!” McCourty posted on the X platform. “Glue guy who everyone in the organization will love being around!”

It’s clear the Patriots set a mandate of finding high-character players in free agency. Former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer lauded linebacker Robert Spillane, who reportedly signed a three-year, $37.5 million deal, for being a great teammate.

Hollins appears to be cut from the same cloth. He’ll bring a big presence — he’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 221 pounds — to the Patriots, too, serving as a much-needed downfield and red-zone target.

The 31-year-old spent last season with the Buffalo Bills, where Hollins compiled 31 receptions for 378 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. Hollins’ best season as a pro came in 2022 with the Las Vegas Raiders as he totaled 57 catches for 690 yards and four touchdowns. The Raiders at that time were under the guidance of Josh McDaniels, who Hollins now reunites with in New England after the Patriots brought McDaniels back as their offensive coordinator.

But perhaps more important than what Hollins can provide on the field, he’ll bring a professional attitude to New England’s receiver room, which is much-needed. Outside of Kendrick Bourne, the Patriots have young wideouts on their roster, who repeatedly threw temper tantrums when things didn’t go their way last season.

The Patriots probably hope that Hollins will set an example for the younger receivers to follow. By bringing Hollins aboard, the Patriots just might get more out of players like Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, who failed them last season.
