Why Cristian Romero’s comments about Tottenham physios should worry fans

0 20

Cristian Romero’s sly dig at Tottenham’s physios comes on the back of plenty of concerning reports regarding the club’s medical team and should thus be a major cause for concern among the fans.

Through Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, Spurs have consistently been ravaged by injuries. The Australian has barely had a fully fit squad to work with for any length of time over the course of nearly two seasons at the club.

What is concerning is that this development has come even though Spurs made a big change to their medical department last year.

The club replaced their former head of medicine and sports science, Geoff Scott, with Nick Davies, who was formerly of Wales and West Ham.

Cristian Romero comments hints at Tottenham problem

Romero made his long-awaited comeback against Bournemouth on Sunday after spending more than four months on the sidelines.

After the game, the centre-back took to social media to express his delight at finally being back out on the pitch, but he made a curious comment that caught the eye of Spurs fans.

Romero thanked the Argentine medical team rather than Tottenham for helping him recover, which many saw as a clear dig at the Spurs physios.

The Tottenham vice-captain’s comments suggest that his rehabilitation was not managed well by the club’s medical department, and their judgement perhaps even contributed to the recurrence of the injury.

This is an especially concerning situation for the Lilywhites as Romero is not the only one who was rushed back too early, with Micky van de Ven and Wilson Odobert also picking up further injuries in their first game back earlier this season.

What Ange Postecoglou has said about Spurs medical department

Back in January, Ange Postecoglou admitted that Spurs will undertake a full review of their medical department on the back of the way the injuries have been managed this season.

The Australian insisted that Tottenham’s injuries cannot just be put down to bad luck, which was perhaps very revealing of the way things have been handled in the treatment room at Hotspur Way.

Postecoglou said at the time about his side’s injuries: “I never think it’s just bad luck. Some of it is. I’ve never lost a goalkeeper for this period of time [before]. But some of it is recurring, particularly this year in terms of guys coming back and re-injuring. It’s something we’re looking at.

“We’re always trying to explore whether we can do things better. Last year was different to this year. Last year it hit us across the board. This year it’s more guys that are coming back who are affected. Knock on wood, we’ve got a core group who are playing a lot and are getting through it ok. But it is something we are trying to address.”
