COSAFA guaranteed extra finalist at the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF CHAN
COSAFA have been guaranteed a fourth representative at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals that will be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August after South Africa and Malawi both won through to the second round of the repechage qualification campaign.
The pair will meet in the final stage for a place at the finals, where they will go into Group C along with co-hosts Uganda, Niger, Guinea and the other qualifier, one of Gambia or Algeria.
South Africa defeated Egypt 4-2 on aggregate to seal their place, which included a super 3-1 away win in Ismailia on Sunday.
Goals from Neo Maema, Yandisa Mfoloz and Siphelele Luthuli gave coach Molefe Ntseki’s side the away victory and a place in the next round.
Malawi came up against fellow COSAFA side Comoros and triumphed 4-0 on aggregate after a pair of 2-0 wins in each leg.
Wongani Lungu opened in the scoring for the home side in the 50th minute before Binwell Katinji’s strike on the hour mark secured the win.
The last round of qualifiers will be played in May with the first leg will taking place between May 2-4, while the return leg fixtures are scheduled for May 10-11.
Angola, Madagascar and Zambia have already sealed their place in the 19-team finals.
