Midweek preview: Development set for Senior Cup semi final
While they have found the going tough in the league this season, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development are 90 minutes of football (and a potential penalty shootout) away from a Wiltshire Senior Cup final appearance. Standing in their way are Wiltshire League Premier Division rivals Wroughton - who Mark Simpkins' side face in a semi final derby on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick off) at the Webbswood Stadium, home of Swindon Supermarine. Wroughton, who are in the running for a top three league finish, are favourites going into the match as they look to make it to the Senior Cup final for a second time in three years. Bassett will fancy their chances of springing a surprise though as they aim for a shot at silverware - and a sixth Senior Cup final appearance in club history (the Men's First Team are responsible for the previous five, including wins in the 1998-99 and 2000-01 seasons). Devizes Town or Warminster Town await the winners in the final. Both Bassett and Wroughton have seen off step six opponents en route to the semi finals. After a comfortable 4-0 triumph against league rivals Bemerton Heath Harlequins Reserves, Bassett stunned Western League Division One high-flyers Calne Town by recording a shock 2-1 quarter final victory. Wroughton's cup journey began with a 3-1 home win against league rivals Trowbridge Town. Away at Wessex League Division One Amesbury Town in the last eight, Wroughton drew 3-3 before prevailing on penalties. The teams' league meetings this season saw a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground before Wroughton won 2-0 on home soil.
Do come along and show your support as Bassett aim to reach the County Cup final!
