Tottenham not ruling out move for £66m forward despite Mathys Tel decision
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to activate the option to buy Mathys Tel in the summer, but that may not stop the North London club from potentially spending a club-record fee to sign a 21-year-old striker.
It remains to be seen if Richarlison has a future at Tottenham beyond the end of the season, with the Brazilian’s injury woes once again preventing him from getting a consistent run in the side this campaign.
The club are thought to be on the lookout for strikers, and it was reported just a few days ago that Tottenham have expressed an interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, whose release clause is expected to reach around €80m (£66.2m) in the summer.
A fresh update has now revealed how Tottenham’s plans for Mathys Tel will impact their pursuit of Sesko.
Spurs could splash the cash on Benjamin Sesko and Matyhs Tel
GiveMeSport have now revealed that Spurs are determined to activate the £45m option to buy Tel permanently from Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
However, despite those plans, the North London side are ‘refusing to rule out the possibility’ of entering the race for Sesko’s services.
The report says that the 21-year-old’s performances at the Red Bull Arena have caught Tottenham’s attention, with the club considering pushing ahead with an approach for the player.
However, it is explained that Spurs know that they face an ‘uphill battle’ to sign the Leipzig man, who has a number of suitors, including Manchester United and Arsenal.
Tottenham want to show their ambition in the summer
GiveMeSport say that Tottenham believe signing Benjamin Sesko alongside Tel in the summer will showcase their ambition, with the club determined to compete near the top end of the table next term.
The Lilywhites are said to be prepared to delve into the market for a big-name marksman, with Sesko identified by Ange Postecoglou as someone capable of elevating the side to the next level.
The publication adds that there is growing belief that Tottenham are ‘willing to spend significant money’ to elevate their squad and ensure they challenge for a Champions League spot next season.
