NBA legend reveals the moment that made him cry as a Tottenham fan

0 6

One of the NBA’s biggest legends, who is a die-hard Tottenham fan, admitted that seeing Spurs make it into the Champions League final in 2019 was one of the most emotional moments of his life, matching anything he went through on the court.

Steve Nash is one of the greatest players to have ever played in the NBA, having a career that spanned two spells in the Phoenix Suns as well as spells at the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Since retiring from the game in 2015, Nash has also had a brief spell as a coach with the Brooklyn Nets, and the Canadian superstar has never hidden his love for Spurs through the years.

He has even had time to visit the Premier League club’s training ground on a couple of occasions and has been a special guest at White Hart Lane in the past.

Steve Nash opens up on emotions during Tottenham’s win over Ajax

Most Spurs fans will point to Lucas Moura’s heroics in Amsterdam to help overcome Ajax in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal as one of the emotional moments of their fandom, and Nash is no different.

The eight-time NBA All-star has opened up on what was going through his mind on the night, admitting that it compares with any of the highs he has had over the course of his professional career.

Nash said (via Flashscore): “I definitely cried on TV in America when Spurs beat Ajax in the semi-final of the Champions League, which was embarrassing.

“I think in that moment, I don’t know if you remember the game, Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick to come back to win in Amsterdam. And, you know, the dramatic nature of it, honestly, I love, love my club, but I never really thought I’d see Spurs in a Champions League final.

“And so to realise it in a dramatic fashion like that, I think it also was nostalgic for just, you know, my dad, my brother, my grandfather, my cousins, like, you know, what it means and how it’s connected us all for, for, you know, 50 years now.

“It was very emotional in that respect, but I never thought about or never really was conscious of, like, how you would feel because there’s this thing that’s tied you all together throughout your life. So, yeah, it got, got, got quite emotional there.

“In the NBA, once or twice, you know, you get emotional and not quite making the finals, losing in the, in the conference finals, feeling like you let your team down as the leader and not finding a way, not even playing well, but not finding a way. And that could be quite emotional as well. So, yeah, long live sport, you know, it’s great.”

Spurs fans will love to see the Ajax moment topped

While that night in Amsterdam will live long in the memories of Tottenham fans, one would hope that it does not turn out to be the most special moment many supporters experience in their lives.

The only thing that can top that moment is perhaps winning a major trophy, with the 17-year wait for silverware making Spurs fans even more desperate.

Many will live in hope that this is the season that the trophy drought is finally ended as Tottenham try to get their hands on the Europa League trophy.
