Tottenham player ratings vs AZ Alkmaar – 2/10 for three shocking senior stars
The curtain has been drawn over the first-leg Europa League Round of 16 action between AZ Alkmaar and Tottenham, and it’s time for our player ratings.
Over the duration of the match, we analysed each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s see how they got on.
Tottenham player ratings vs AZ Alkmaar
Guglielmo Vicario: Vicario was hugely important in keeping the scoreline at just 1-0 as he made one or two vital saves, most notably denying the in-form Parrott one-on-one in the first half. 8.
Djed Spence: Spence tried and tried to bomb forward when he had the ball deep in his half, but the fullback kept running into trouble before he could travel five yards. He showed signs of promise but it wasn’t enough tonight. 5.
Kevin Danso: Danso was okay tonight, but he made small errors a few too many times which, luckily, didn’t lead to anything pivotal. He made some tidy passes and exciting charges forward, though. 4.5.
Archie Gray: Gray is one of few Spurs players who can hold their head high after tonight, which is becoming a theme this season. He’s always reliable, no matter where he plays, and made some important blocks and interventions when dealing with AZ’s tenacious attack. 7.
Destiny Udogie: Udogie was poor tonight, there’s no two ways about it. He didn’t get involved in the game and was shut out for whatever reason. He normally likes to bomb forward and link up with his adjacent winger, but he didn’t even bother tonight. 3.
Rodrigo Bentancur: Bentancur looked like he didn’t want to be out there tonight, and despite the 8-day rest, the Uruguayan looked fatigued and sluggish. He battled when he wanted to, but he continues to be below-par in that Tottenham midfield. 2.
Lucas Bergvall: Bergvall’s first-half blunder was the difference-maker tonight, as he shanked a clearance that deflected into his own net early in the contest. He reacted well, however, and was one of Spurs’ better players on the night. Unfortunately, it will all be overshadowed by the own goal but you can’t fault his running, determination and attitude tonight. 6.
James Maddison: Maddison was poor and struggled to create anything before he was substituted. It’s games like these where we are crying out for a leader, or just someone to create a big opportunity, that Maddison needs to step up in. 2.
Brennan Johnson: Brennan’s one-dimensional style of play was too predictable and easy to defend tonight, and the Welshman didn’t get any real chances either. He created next to nothing off the right and can be ashamed of his showing out there. 2.5.
Mathys Tel: Tel was lacklustre in the first half and poor with his back to goal. He slowed attacks down and struggled to make any chances. The 19-year-old didn’t even register a shot, and was substituted at half-time. 3.5.
Heung-min Son: Son was really poor too, wasting attacks and having shots blocked constantly in the first half. He was moved centrally at half-time and became non-existent. Lacking in almost every department tonight. 2.
Substitutes:
Wilson Odobert: Odobert replaced Tel at half-time and struggled to make any sort of impact. 4.
Pedro Porro: Porro was average when he came on, his performance not enough tonight. 4.
Pape Sarr: Sarr added a bit of energy in the Spurs midfield but failed to do much with the ball. 5.
Dominic Solanke: Solanke came on and looked sharp and ready to contribute, but his cameo was cut short as he picked up yet another injury during a collision with Owuso-Oduro. Just great. 5.5.
Dane Scarlett: Replaced Solanke. N/A.
