Tottenham fans will love Joe Cole’s Europa League prediction but not Peter Crouch’s
Tottenham Hotspur’s domestic campaign has been nothing short of disastrous, but could they salvage something in the Europa League? Joe Cole and Ally McCoist seem to think so.
With 27 games played, just ten wins, three draws, and 13 defeats, Tottenham Hotspur sit 13th in the Premier League table on 33 points. It has been a dismal campaign, one that could end as their worst league finish in recent memory.
To make matters worse, they have already been knocked out of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, leaving their hopes of silverware hanging by a thread.
Yet, despite their struggles, there is still a glimmer of hope. Spurs remain in the Europa League, where they are set to face AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16. It is their last chance at redemption, but do they have what it takes?
Joe Cole and Ally McCoist back Spurs to triumph in Europe
Of course, if Tottenham are to lift the Europa League trophy, they will have to navigate past some of Europe’s best, including fellow English side Manchester United, who have also endured a torrid campaign. We already know Tottenham’s potential path to the Europa League Final.
United currently sit 14th in the league, one place below Spurs, making for an unusual season for both clubs.
Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of the Europa League round of 16 first-leg ties, Joe Cole and Ally McCoist were asked which of the two struggling sides would progress further in the competition.
McCoist pointed out that Tottenham’s biggest advantage lies in their squad depth, with key players returning from injury at a crucial time. Cole agreed, stating that he would be shocked if Manchester United even made it to the semi-finals.
Both pundits went a step further, predicting that Tottenham could win the Europa League. The Scotsman was particularly confident, saying: “I think Spurs are going further. I think Spurs could win it. I think if they get key players back, they get a boost, they’ve picked up a little bit.”
Joe Cole echoed the sentiment, while McCoist doubled down on his belief that United’s struggles would see them fall short.
“I’d be stunned if United get to the semi-final. I’d be stunned. Spurs, I fancy them more. If you could give me one team, I could have the team, I’d have Spurs.”.
Peter Crouch and Rio Ferdinand weigh in on Tottenham’s chances
Peter Crouch, however, is not entirely convinced. While he believes Spurs will go further than Manchester United, he does not see them winning the competition.
“I’ve done a lot of their games this year as well and there’s obviously the hurdle of not having won things for a long time. I don’t believe they can win but I think they can get further than United.”
Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand sided with Cole and McCoist, surprisingly backing Tottenham to outperform United in Europe.
“I’m just going with my heart over my head but I’m going to agree, Spurs are going to go further if I’m going to use my head.”
Spurs may have endured a nightmare of a season domestically, but in Europe, they still have a shot at redemption. Whether they can go all the way remains to be seen, but for now, Cole, McCoist, and Ferdinand are putting their faith in Ange Postecoglou’s men to make a deep run in the competition.
