Paul Robinson urges Tottenham not to make hasty decision with star player

0 13

Paul Robinson has made an interesting observation about Heung-min Son’s struggles this season and has warned Tottenham not to hastily part ways with their captain this summer.

Although Son’s numbers in front of goal are still impressive, most Spurs fans will admit that the South Korean has been well short of his best this season.

Not only does he seem to have lost some pace, but he has very uncharacteristically been lacking in sharpness in the final third, regularly missing the kind of chances that he used to bury with consummate ease in the past.

Some reports over the last couple of weeks have suggested that there are major concerns at Tottenham over Heung-min Son’s form, with some at the club expecting him to leave at the end of this season.

Paul Robinson warns Tottenham against selling Heung-min Son

Robinson believes that Son’s struggles this campaign cannot be seen in isolation from Tottenham’s struggles as a side.

The former Spurs number one pointed out that not only does the Korean superstar bring commercial benefits to the club, but he still has a lot to give to the side on the pitch.

When asked if Tottenham should cash in on Son this summer, the pundit told BetFred TV: “It’s hard because of the relationship he’s had with the club and the performance levels he’s had. Harry Kane went and Son Heung-min took that mantle on.

“Now he’s had a dip in form, people are quick to judge, but it’s only Son that’s going to know whether he’s struggling to cope with the rigours of the Premier League or whether it’s a case of him just being out of form.

“To be fair to him, he’s playing in a poor team. Tottenham have been poor this season. It’s a similar situation to Kevin De Bruyne’s because time catches up with everybody at some point and the fact that they’ve wisely extended his contract by another year means there’s still some monetary value for him.

“But is it worth selling him when you consider what he could give you next year? Son brings a lot of commercial revenue to the club as well, so there are a lot of factors to consider. I still believe he’s got a lot more to give.”

Ange Postecoglou launches a passionate defence of Son

While Son has been receiving plenty of criticism from the mainstream media as well on social media, Postecoglou has continued to defend his captain.

Speaking earlier this week, the Australian dismissed suggestions that the former Bayern Leverkusen man is past his best, insisting that he still belongs among the elite forwards in the Premier League.

Postecoglou came out in defence of Heung-min Son, stating: “His ability to beat players, even in tight areas, is elite. His finishing I think is elite. Sonny’s benefitted from the fact he’s been able to have a break between games.

“We saw that on the weekend after being able to recover from one game to another and having a full week to get his energy levels back, he was outstanding, particularly in the first half. And he was great before.

“You never want to try to predict with players like Sonny how long he will go for because those kinds of players I think always defy whatever odds there are because of the way they look after themselves and conduct themselves, the levels.

“Even this year, as difficult as it has been for us, I think his numbers still stack up. You weigh him up against any winger in the league, he’s still going to be top five. He’s probably been top five in the nine or 10 years he’s been here.

“Not many would rank with Sonny in terms of output on a consistent basis from his position. He’s top 10 per cent of players in his position in the Premier League. Those are the facts and if he’s continuing to do that, there’s nothing to say he should slow down.”
