Archie Gray follows in the footsteps of Harry Kane and Dele Alli by winning prestigious award
Tottenham Hotspur’s Archie Gray has been honoured by being named the Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards after his exploits in his first season at the North London club.
When Archie Gray made the move from Leeds United to Tottenham on the back of his breakthrough season at Elland Road last summer, the teenager would not have expected to play much in his first season at the capital.
However, due to Spurs’ injury woes, the 18-year-old has ended up playing as much as any other player in the squad, with 35 appearances to his name across all competitions this season.
Gray has primarily been played out of position at centre-back, and yet, he has not been fazed by the challenge, emerging as one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers over recent months.
Archie Gray wins Young Player of the Year at London Football Awards
The Leeds academy graduate has been honoured for his impressive work at N17 this season, taking home the prestigious Young Player of the Year Award in the London Football Awards.
Given the kind of top young talent he was competing with, not just within the Spurs squad, but also across Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Crystal Palace and other clubs, this accolade comes as a huge recognition of Archie Gray’s talent.
Tottenham fans will feel that it is richly deserved, given the character and the fighting spirit that the teenager has shown after being asked to fill in out of position for much of the season.
Both Harry Kane and Dele Alli won the London Football Awards Young Player of the Year during their early seasons at Spurs, so it certainly seems like a good omen.
Will Gray move into Tottenham’s midfield next season?
Given how well Gray has done at centre-back, Ange Postecoglou may be tempted to persist with the youngster in that role so that he can develop into a top-class defender.
Many who have watched the 18-year-old closely feel that his best position is in the base of midfield, but he is yet to play a single game there for Spurs.
Whether or not he gets a chance to play there next season might depend on the signings that Tottenham make in the summer.
