Career So Far: Jamie McGrath
Trophies, titles, international experience and more – read all about Jamie McGrath’s career so far!
Creative midfielder Jamie McGrath has signed a pre-contract with the Club and will join the Hibees at the start of summer 2025.
This will be the midfielder’s fourth stint at a Scottish Club – having spent time with St Mirren, Dundee United and Aberdeen before switching to the capital.
Born in Athboy, Ireland, McGrath spent his early years playing for his local club before moving to Dublin side – St Patrick’s Athletic. McGrath moved through the age grades at St Pat’s before making his senior debut at the age of 17.
Featuring predominantly in central midfield – or anywhere across the front three – McGrath made 66 appearances across the best part of three full seasons. During that time, he scored nine goals and won the Irish League Cup twice and the Leinster Senior Cup.
His impressive performances caught the eye of fellow League of Ireland side, Dundalk FC, where he signed permanently in January 2017. The midfielder racked up over 100 appearances for ‘The Lilywhites’ registering 30 goal contributions and adding more silverware to his trophy cabinet. During his time with Dundalk, he won another two Irish League Cups, two league titles, the FAI Cup, the President of Ireland Cup and the Champions Cup.
At the age of 23, he made his first move to Scotland joining Premiership side St Mirren in January 2020. The attacking midfielder had several memorable moments with The Buddies, during his two years in Paisley.
Across the course of the 2020/21 campaign McGrath scored 17 goals in 46 appearances – including bagging a brace against Rangers in a 3-2 win to knock the Gers out of the League Cup in December 2020.
McGrath went on to be named the club’s Player of the Year, playing his part in helping St Mirren achieve their highest top-flight league position in over 30 years.
That form earned the Republic of Ireland international a move south of the border to join Wigan on deadline day (January 2022). Despite helping Wigan gain promotion to the Championship, McGrath’s spell in England didn’t work out as planned and he joined Dundee United on loan for the duration of the 2022/23 campaign. Once again, the midfielder hit the ground running on his return to Scotland – registering 12 goal contributions in 37 matches.
After departing Wigan, McGrath returned once again to Scotland – this time joining fellow Premiership side, Aberdeen.
McGrath represented The Dons in the UEFA Conference League Group Stages and helped Aberdeen to the Viaplay Cup Final and the Scottish Cup Semi-Final in his first season. Featuring predominantly as an attacking midfielder, McGrath has 16 goals and eight assists in 75 appearances to date.
On the international front, McGrath represented the Republic of Ireland at Under 19 and Under 21 level before making his senior debut in June 2021.
The energetic midfielder is yet to score for his national team, however, he has set up four goals in his 13 caps to date. The 28-year-old’s last appearance for the Republic of Ireland was in October 2024 in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Finland.
With his Aberdeen contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, McGrath has committed his future to Hibernian FC and will join the Hibees permanently in June 2025!
