Ange Postecoglou avoided Tottenham sack at Ipswich, says pundit with 47 Premier League goals

0 3

Ange Postecoglou may have narrowly escaped the sack at Tottenham Hotspur, according to former Premier League striker Troy Deeney.

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou, has been under pressure for much of the season following his side’s slump into the bottom half of the Premier League table and their early exits from two cup competitions.

However, in recent weeks, Spurs have shown signs of a resurgence, with the Lilywhites winning three consecutive league matches to restore some optimism among supporters.

Their latest victory came at Portman Road where Brennan Johnson and co endured a shaky start but eventually asserted control, with Spurs securing a dominant 4-1 win against Ipswich Town.

A brace from Johnson and a goal apiece from Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski ensured a third successive Premier League win.

Troy Deeney says Tottenham win at Ipswich saved Postecoglou’s job

Following their triumph at the weekend, Troy Deeney suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham hinged on that result.

Speaking in his BBC Sport ‘Team of the Week’ column, Deeney claimed the Australian manager could have been dismissed had Spurs lost.

“I’m going to go for Johnson from Spurs. Two goals in a game where I felt if they lost, the manager would have got sacked. He showed up in a big way,” Deeney said.

Of course, there has been no official indication from the club that the manager was on the brink, however, Deeney’s comments highlight just how difficult the situation has been at Hotspur Way.

Ange Postecoglou’s future may depend on Tottenham winning the Europa League

While questions remain over Postecoglou’s future, there is a growing belief that his fate will not be decided solely by Tottenham’s league performances.

That is not to say he would be immune if Spurs were to slide towards the relegation zone, but the prevailing sentiment is that his tenure will be defined by their Europa League campaign.

Should Tottenham fail to mount a serious challenge in Europe this season—especially with a full-strength squad—the likelihood of Postecoglou being shown the door would increase significantly.
