Mathys Tel reveals what he told Ange Postecoglou about his favourite position at Tottenham
Mathys Tel has shared what he told Ange Postecoglou about his best position before leading the line in his first three games for Tottenham.
It does not get too much harder for new signings than to start their stint in England with away trips to Anfield and Villa Park, with Tel being thrown straight into the deep end since arriving at Spurs.
The Frenchman then was handed his Premier League debut in the high-pressure game against Manchester United on Sunday, which, in some respects was a must-win game for the Lilywhites.
Owing to the injuries to Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, Tel has had to lead the line in all the games so far, with Postecoglou not having the luxury of slowly easing the 19-year-old into life at N17.
Mathys Tel gives Ange Postecoglou three Tottenham position options
Those who have followed the forward’s career closely have urged Postecoglou to use Mathys Tel as a number nine rather than as a winger.
However, the on-loan Bayern man has now made it clear that he is more than happy to play wherever he is required across the front three, insisting that he is focused on helping the team.
When asked about his favourite position, Tel told SPURSPLAY: “I can play in three positions, on the left side, right side and number nine. For me, my mentality is where the coach needs me, I’ll play. I just want to enjoy playing football and bring something for my team – so I can play anywhere no problem.”
Postecoglou has a big decision to make over coming weeks
One would expect Dominic Solanke to walk into the starting eleven when he is fit, with the Englishman’s impending return set to give Postecoglou a selection headache.
Tel is much more naturally suited to playing on the left than he is on the right, but moving the teenager to the left will mean leaving out captain Heung-min Son.
With Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert also back to fitness, Postecoglou suddenly has an embarrassment of riches upfront.
