Ange Postecoglou blasts ‘ridiculous notion’ peddled by media about Spurs
After seeing his side register a third straight win in the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou has blasted those in the media who were making doomsday predictions about Spurs this season, accusing them of ‘hysteria’.
Postecoglou has sounded like a broken record over recent months, regularly pointing at the club’s unprecedented injury crisis as the reason for the team’s poor form.
The Australian has been telling anyone who would listen that the fit players are burned out as a result of having to play every game, but some in the media wrote that off as an excuse.
However, Tottenham‘s performances and results against Man Utd and Ipswich have vindicated Postecoglou’s point, with his side looking a lot sharper now that the schedule has eased up and the size of their injury list has shrunk.
Ange Postecoglou takes aim at Spurs critics for creating hysteria
Tottenham still have a lot of work to do to achieve a respectable league finish as they are still languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table.
However, Spurs fans will be encouraged by the performance that they saw from their side at Portman Road Stadium and will believe that they can have a strong end to the season if they can maintain the same standard over the coming months.
A tongue-in-cheek question was posed to Postecoglou in the post-match press conference, with the Tottenham head coach being asked if his side is now safe from relegation after their thumping win over Ipswich.
The 59-year-old told Football.London: “It goes to show you how ridiculous a notion it was to start with. People saying we’re safe with 12 games to go, and people are actually talking about it. That’s the hysteria. And that’s all framed around putting pressure on me and the club. I get that, when you’re in that position you’ve got to accept that.
“For me, it was always about trying… we always had the Villa FA Cup game as a marker for us. We’ve got to get to that space as best we could. We obviously didn’t get the outcomes we wanted during that time. But not through a lack of will or effort from the players.
“That was always my primary concern, to protect them and support them. Because they gave everything during that period. Now they’ve got some help, they’ve got some rest. Like I said, we’re not happy where we are in the league, obviously, it’s unacceptable. But we’ve got an opportunity to address that.”
Postecoglou should ignore media criticism
The nature of the 24-hour media cycle and the huge spotlight on the Premier League means that pundits will always say controversial things to get attention.
That is the nature of the media landscape we live in, with knee-jerk reactions being rewarded in the current clickbait ecosystem.
Postecoglou would be better off accepting that there would always be unfair attacks on him and his side rather than constantly referring to an agenda against him and Spurs.
On most occasions, these comments by pundits do not warrant a response as they are not well-thought-through assessments.
