Tottenham fans think new signing is ‘too good to be a backup’ after Ipswich win
Tottenham Hotspur supporters react to Kevin Danso’s performance on social media after the club’s 4-1 Premier League win over Ipswich Town.
Tottenham Hotspur secured their third straight Premier League victory with a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Brennan Johnson’s first-half brace, along with goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence, ensured all three points for Ange Postecoglou’s men.
Despite the convincing scoreline, Ipswich started strong and looked tactically sharp, causing problems for Spurs’ defence. Liam Delap, in particular, posed a constant threat. However, the defensive duo of Kevin Danso and Archie Gray kept him at bay as the game progressed.
Although Ipswich’s only goal came after Danso was dispossessed on the edge of the box, the Austrian defender made up for it later in the game.
Since arriving on loan from RC Lens, Kevin Danso has been a mainstay in Tottenham’s backline, especially in the wake of Radu Dragusin’s ACL injury. He has started every game since joining, and despite Spurs’ early struggles, his performances have been largely exempted from criticism.
Against Ipswich, he once again impressed, completing 85 passes with 91% accuracy, making six clearances, and winning three of his four aerial duels.
Tottenham fans shower Kevin Danso with praise
Following the match, we took to X to ask Spurs fans their opinion on Kevin Danso’s performance.
Many fans believe Danso is the perfect blend of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. One supporter claimed, “When you combine Van de Ven and Romero, Danso is the product.” Another added, “Not a single bad performance in a Spurs shirt. Love the man.”
Others described him as “a warrior” and “exactly what we have missed at the back – strong, dominant, and composed.”
Some pointed out his early mistake but still praised his overall display. One supporter wrote, “Thought he was fantastic. Slight mistake, but he is still adapting. Delap and Hirst have bullied defenders this season, but didn’t see either get the better of him once.” Another replied, “Started shaky, ended really solid. So happy we’ve finally got a good backup CB that fits the system.”
Some supporters were concerned about his potential lack of game time once the squad is fully fit. One fan admitted, “Hate to imagine he’ll soon have to be benched.” Others were more optimistic about his future, suggesting he could compete for a starting spot. “Great addition to the team. Not as good as Cuti but hopefully will get there.”
A significant portion of fans also compared Danso to Spurs’ other centre-backs. One even claimed he had already surpassed Dragusin. While another supporter replied, “He starts with Van de Ven when he is back. Romero warms the bench.”
Danso’s future at Spurs after Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven return
Regardless of how Ange Postecoglou manages his centre-back options once Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero return, having someone of Kevin Danso’s quality as a backup will be invaluable. Given his loan deal includes an option to buy, Spurs will have a big decision to make in the summer.
Reports have suggested that Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Micky van de Ven, given their ongoing centre-back crisis. The Dutchman is a key part of Postecoglou’s system and a fan favourite, but his recurring injuries remain a concern. If he stays, Danso could still play a significant role, as many fans believe he will feature as often as Van de Ven.
The Argentine’s future is also uncertain, with it said that Tottenham are willing to make Cristian Romero the highest-paid player at the club to secure his long-term commitment. However, interest from top clubs could still complicate matters.
Meanwhile, a long-serving club legend could leave in June, with Leeds United eyeing a move for Ben Davies if they secure promotion.
If either Van de Ven or Romero depart, Spurs’ decision to bring in Danso may prove to be a well-planned move for the future. For now, he’ll likely be playing a lot for the remainder of his spell at Tottenham, even if Romero and Van de Ven return, as Ange would not want to repeat his mistake of rushing them both back.
