Three Red Sox Thoughts Before First Game Action Of Spring Training
The Boston Red Sox take the field for game action for the first time this year.
Boston hosts the Northeastern Huskies for an annual exhibition at JetBlue Park on Friday. The Red Sox won’t play many starters but will still have exciting young players on the field against local collegiate talent from the Boston collegiate team.
The first week of workouts saw a splash signing, position battles and several storylines to spark excitement for the 2025 season. After the Northeastern game, it’s time for Grapefruit League play and plenty for Boston to assess over the next month in Florida.
With that, here are three Red Sox thoughts as games begin this spring.
Let The Kids Play
Alex Cora’s confidence in Boston’s top prospects was on display at spring training.
Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer all should impact the Red Sox at some point during the season. Cora voiced earlier in camp that the three elite prospects will see plenty of time on the field in Grapefruit League play with opportunities to prove themselves to the big-league club.
Campbell especially has real momentum and could be the X-factor to finalizing the Red Sox roster heading into Opening Day on March 27.
Boston Still Needs This Combination
The Red Sox have decisions to make at the end of camp as to where Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman fit into the lineup and the defensive alignments.
The combination of Devers, Bregman and Campbell involved still seems to make the most sense for the Red Sox prior to the start of exhibition games.
Pitching Is Deeper
The Red Sox get their first game look at new ace Garrett Crochet on Sunday, but the improvements of Boston’s pitching staff go deeper.
Alex Cora raved about multiple depth options to help the big-league club while fellow starting addition Walker Buehler already has the positive attention of pitching coach Andrew Bailey.
The Red Sox now have the depth and talent to avoid a fourth-straight pitching shortcoming in the second half of the season.
