0 4

Tottenham Hotspur’s opponents in the Europa League round of sixteen have been confirmed after the draw took place in Nyon, Switzerland.

Tottenham finished in fourth place in the top eight of the Europa League table as a result of the 3-0 win over Elfsborg which granted them automatic entry into the round of sixteen.

From the round of 16 onwards, the tournament progresses within brackets that have already been determined by the original league positions.

Following last night’s results, Tottenham knew that they would either face Real Sociedad or AZ Alkmaar after the Spanish side eliminated FC Midtjylland, while AZ caused something of an upset with a 6-3 aggregate victory over Galatasaray.

With Galatasaray among eight sides knocked out, Tottenham fans will certainly have been glad to have seen the exit of the Turkish giants considering Spurs’ 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray back in November.

In the group stages, Tottenham beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in North London courtesy of a first-half Richarlison penalty and will now face the Dutch outfit once more.

Tottenham will play AZ Alkmaar in Europa League round of sixteen

The draw has seen Tottenham pitted against AZ Alkmaar in the next round of the Europa League.

Due to the way the pairing has worked and the brackets of each side of the draw has meant that Tottenham could face Manchester United in the final of the competition, should both Premier League sides progress that far.

Tottenham’s path to the Europa League final will see them next face Ajax or Eintracht Frankfurt if they can overcome AZ.

Following the draw, Tottenham fans have been reacting to playing AZ Alkmaar with some already dreaming of booking their tickets to Bilbao in May.

When do the round of sixteen matches take place?

The first leg will be played on Thursday, March 6th away from home, with the returning fixture taking place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, March 13th.

What about the further Europa League knockout rounds?

Who do Tottenham play next?

Following the draw, Ange Postecoglou‘s side must switch attention back to the Premier League with a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday, kick-off is at 3pm.
