How Winning 4 Nations Gold Would Propel Brad Marchand’s Legacy
BOSTON — For the second time in his career, Bruins captain Brad Marchand will play a game at TD Garden from the visitors bench when Canada battles Team USA in the highly anticipated 4 Nations Face-Off championship game Thursday night.
Marchand has had the honor of representing Canada in the international stage at various times throughout his hockey career.
While his record on the international stage is not quite as decorated as Team Canada Sidney Crosby’s (he’s a memeber of the quadgold group), Marchand has achieved many of the same goals.
Marchand’s hockey legacy includes:
— U18 Junior World Cup Gold Medal
— Two World Junior Gold Medals
— One World Cup of Hockey Gold Medal
— One IIHF World Gold Medal
Oh, and a Stanley Cup championship with the Bruins.
On the international stage, Marchand has 38 points (22 goals and 16 assists) across 41 games. His short-handed goal against Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup finals clinched a gold medal for Canada.
Despite his success on the ice, Marchand has one goal in the 4 Nations tournament. The 36-year-old has had fun playing with Canadian greats and fellow Nova Scotia natives Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon as well as the greatest hockey player on the planet — Connor McDavid.
“Man, you guys are fun to watch,” Marchand said after Canada’s first win of the tournament against Sweden, in a league-provided video. “I might be the biggest fan here.”
When Team Canada came onto the ice for pregame warmups, the boos rang down from the TD Garden faithful. Marchand will have to wait and see how he is received by the Black and Gold fans during the game.
“I haven’t thought about it,” Marchand said Monday after Canada punched their ticket to the final. “It might happen. I get booed everywhere, so I’m not too worried about it.”
Something tells us if Marchand were to light the lamp for Canada, the Bruins fans in attendance will shower their captain with some cheers.
