Yankees Fans Are NOT Happy About Team’s Major Announcement
The Yankees are nearly 200 games above .500 under Aaron Boone, have won three division titles and are the defending American League champions. However, New York’s decision to extend the manager is not going over well in the Bronx.
New York announced Thursday it is extending Boone’s contract, adding two years to his deal that should keep him inside the Yankees’ dugout through the 2027 season.
The Yankees announced the decision around 11 a.m. ET, and there were more than 800 comments on the X post before noon on the East Coast. Most of those responses were similar in tone, and let’s just say there’s no grassroots movement planned to stage some sort of celebration in The Big Apple.
Here’s a small collection of some rather agitated Yankees fans who were apparently clamoring for a new voice, airing their grievances with owner Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman and Boone himself.
@TattooFaceMike: This dude is literally only the manager because he hit that walk off and then blew his knee so they traded for ARod. lol.
@cvarley1734: One of the reasons I did not buy season tickets….
@JimmyRandazzo: Please tell me you’re kidding
@DJLeMVP: We have our 3B!!!
@awHALEnaw2: Guys, we were supposed to spend money on a 3rd Baseman that was currently playing!
@UnhingedPatrick: This organization is a joke.
@BanterGabagool: I genuinely hate the Boone Era so much. All he’s done is facilitate a loser mentality into this team.
@LeftyontheLinks: My season is ruined before it even starts! Thanks Cashman!
@andrew11russell: Absolute joke. Those are not the same Yankees we grew up watching.
Rewarding mediocrity. Have fun, Hal. Once you lose the loyal Yankee fans by cutting budget and keeping an outdated front office, you’ll lose the true value of your franchise and equity in the process.
Now, in fairness to Boone, not all of the reactions were negative. That being said, a good deal of the positive tweets came from fans of other teams, the bulk of those from Red Sox fans.
The Yankees haven’t finished below .500 in any of Boone’s seven seasons. The club won 94 games last season en route to winning the division and made it beyond the American League Championship Series for the first time in Boone’s tenure. They were simply outclassed by the Dodgers, though, who rolled to a gentlemen’s sweep over five games, the clincher coming in an especially embarrassing performance from New York. Expectations in Gotham are always high, so it’s not entirely surprising to see impatient Yankees fans — New York hasn’t won a World Series since 2009 — wanting some sort of change.
Even so, only the Dodgers have shorter odds to win the World Series in 2025 than the Yankees, who once again should be one of the best teams in baseball … even if a vocal portion of the fan base doesn’t believe the club will break through with Boone calling the shots.
