How Celtics Newcomer Fits Into Lineup After Quick Debut

BOSTON — The Celtics filled a needed roster spot with the signing of Torrey Craig last week.

Joe Mazzulla previewed the veteran forward’s role on the team before he made his debut Wednesday night in a win over the San Antonio Spurs.

“Anyone can help us on any given night,” Mazzulla told reporters at TD Garden. “Whatever he gives us to win the matchup, win the lineup and win a stretch of games, he’s prepared for that. That’s it. He’s just as important as everyone else on the team because of how he can give us a chance to win on any given night.”

Craig checked in during the second quarter for the first time in a Celtics uniform. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers and worked into the rhythm of Boston’s defense in nine minutes.

“He’s got an important role just because of his versatility,” Mazzulla said after the win. “It’s going to take time for him to understand and learn the things we do on both ends of the floor. … He did some of that night (with) his defensive versatility and making those two shots. Just got to get him up to speed.”

Craig continues his eighth NBA season with the Celtics, his sixth franchise in his career. Mazzulla knows that while Boston’s system has a learning curve, Craig’s veteran experience is a tool for the Celtics.

“We got to rely on his experience,” Mazzulla added. “He’s been around a long time. Played a lot of basketball. It’s not rocket science, so I think it’s just simplifying.

The Celtics now get eight days off as the NBA heads west for All-Star Weekend in San Francisco.
