Alex Bregman Reportedly Turned Down This Contract Offer To Join Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox won the Alex Bregman sweepstakes Wednesday night, reportedly agreeing to a three-year, $120 million contract with the longtime Houston Astros star.

The deal reportedly includes two opt-outs — after the 2025 and 2026 seasons — and was enough to steer Bregman away from Boston’s competitors, including the Detroit Tigers.

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday night, citing sources with knowledge of the agreement, that the Tigers offered Bregman a six-year contract worth $171.5 million (with some deferred money). Detroit’s offer included an opt-out after the 2026 season, according to Petzold.

Obviously, the $28.6 million average annual value of Detroit’s reported offer pales in comparison to the $40 million AAV that Bregman reportedly landed from Boston. But it nevertheless was a competitive long-term proposal from the Tigers, whose contending window opened with their 2024 playoff berth.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are coming off a disappointing 2024. And they haven’t made the playoffs since advancing to the 2021 American League Championship Series, where they coincidentally lost to Bregman and the Astros.

But the Red Sox made several moves this offseason geared toward pushing for an AL East title in 2025, including trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Walker Buehler to bolster their pitching staff. Signing Bregman, a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, could really swing the pendulum in Boston’s favor.

UPDATE (Thursday, 1:30 a.m. ET): We now know what the Chicago Cubs reportedly offered Alex Bregman before he agreed to join the Red Sox.
