Tottenham players might be faking injuries to avoid pressure – Ben Foster claims

0 7

Tottenham have had an unusually large injury list for much of the season, and Ben Foster has now suggested quite astonishingly that some Spurs players might be deliberately delaying their return to the field.

Tottenham’s unprecedented injury crisis

While other clubs have had injury lists that have gone into double digits on rare occasions, what makes Tottenham’s situation unique is the duration of many of those injuries.

Ange Postecoglou has effectively had to make do with half a squad for around three months, which has meant that the same set of players have had to play nearly every three days.

As a result, several members of the Tottenham squad have reportedly played more minutes than almost all of their counterparts across Europe’s top five leagues since November.

Ben Foster levels strange accusation at Spurs players

Foster has now offered a strange reason to explain Tottenham‘s bloated injury list.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper suggested that the injuries might be more in the players’ heads and claimed that several of them might not be very keen on returning to the pitch, given the way things are going for Ange Postecoglou’s side at the moment.

He said on the Ben Foster podcast about Tottenham’s injury situation: “We spoke about it on the show a few weeks ago. A lot of injuries are in people’s heads as well, you know. So a few hiding, potentially.

“Without a doubt. Players want to be injured. Players prefer to be injured, because then they’re out of the firing line, and then it’s nothing to do with them.

“It’s not their fault that we’re losing. It’s not my fault. And then how desperate are they to try and get back as well?

“Like, I’ve seen so many players that when we’re losing games week in, week out, I’m like, mate, are you going to be back soon or what? And he’s like, still feel it. I still feel it.

“And I was talking to the physio, and I’ll go, what’s the scan saying? The scan says it’s like fine, really. And I’ll go, is it in his head? And he’ll go, yeah, it’s in his head. Of course, it’s in his head.”

Could Foster’s theory explain Romero’s and Van de Ven’s absence?

Foster has been in plenty of dressing rooms before and is talking from experience. There could be a kernel of truth in what he is saying, particularly when it comes to injuries which are not obvious like a strain or tear.

Perhaps Romero and Van de Ven are a little bit hesitant to come back onto the pitch as they are worried about whether their bodies can cope with the intensity of Premier League football, particularly after rushing back too quickly last time.
