Why Speculated Matthew Stafford Trade Wouldn’t Be Ideal For Patriots

The Giants need a quarterback and the Patriots surely want New York to draft one with its third overall pick.

However, there seems to be some smoke building connecting the G-Men to Rams veteran Matthew Stafford. New York trading for Stafford wouldn’t be great news for those in New England. And that’s because of the trickle-down effect it would have on April’s draft.

The Giants wouldn’t need to select either quarterback Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders if they traded for Stafford. Such a deal would allow New York to instead select a prospect like Travis Hunter, Abdul Carter or another top players the Patriots have their eye on — as long as they don’t trade No. 3 for Stafford.

Stafford to the Giants gained steam Wednesday because Big Blue hired his brother-in-law, Chad Hall, as their assistant quarterbacks coach. That must mean the whole family is packing up and moving across the country, right? No, obviously not.

But New York’s need at the position and Stafford’s reported discontent with his contract give it some legs. As do the social media posts from NFL draft expert Daniel Jeremiah, who questioned what it would cost LA, and NFL writer Gregg Rosenthal, who hinted Stafford was more likely to play elsewhere in 2025. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote about the possibility, as well.

“I actually really like the New York Giants as a landing spot for Stafford — they might be second to the Pittsburgh Steelers for me as an ideal fit,” Breer wrote Wednesday.

The speculation might soon engulf Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who is on the trade block himself. That also wouldn’t be ideal for those at One Patriot Place given the Patriots should be trying to pair Drake Maye with Kupp.

For the Patriots, however, it all starts in the draft. And the more non-quarterbacks available when they’re on the clock at No. 4 overall, the better.
