Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he chose against rushing a couple of Spurs players back from injury against Aston Villa and explained why the “re-set point” has unfortunately come a little too late for Tottenham.

Spurs injury returnees expected this week

Several of Tottenham’s injured players are now edging close to a recovery, which will be a much-needed boost for the Lilywhites.

Unfortunately, Postecoglou‘s men have little to play for domestically as they are a long way adrift of the top sides in the Premier League table and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in a matter of just days.

Spurs now get a rare full week off before they host Manchester United in the Premier League, and Postecoglou is glad that his troops will be finally getting some much-needed rest.

Ange Postecoglou on the upcoming Tottenham ‘re-set’

Postecoglou has now confessed that he could have risked some players in the FA Cup fourth-round clash against Villa but decided against it as he wanted to be cautious.

He explained that this could be the week there might finally be some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of injuries, with four players potentially on the way back.

When asked if he is frustrated that the return of the injured players has come after Tottenham’s knockout games, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah, that’s the timing of things. Just unfortunate for us that we couldn’t get a couple back, we were hoping to get a couple back for this last week and it didn’t happen. We could have risked a couple but with what’s ahead we went conservative on that.

“It is a bit of a re-set. We’ll get three, maybe four, players back this week, with the possibility of one or two others in the week or two after that. More importantly, this group that has been going gets a rest.

“They can go a whole week now without having to get up for another game. We got back from Liverpool at 2 am on Friday, the early hours of the morning. So they can get some rest they desperately need physically and mentally.”

Can Spurs injuries just be put down to bad luck?

For two seasons in a row, Tottenham have lost the majority of the players in the squad to injuries, and in a lot of those cases, they have been serious injuries which have kept the players out of action for several months.

While some of it may be down to just bad luck, there is a clear pattern emerging, which suggests that the intensity that Postecoglou expects in training and in matches is just not sustainable at this level.
