Alan Shearer says one Tottenham star deserves credit despite wretched results
Alan Shearer feels that only one Tottenham player comes away from the game at Villa Park with any credit, insisting that the future is bright for the youngster who has been thrown in at the deep end.
Tottenham players heavily criticised after FA Cup loss
Just three days on from being knocked out of the Carabao Cup, Spurs crashed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, with Aston Villa schooling them on Sunday.
Although Tottenham had double-digit absentees due to injury, the players have not been spared from criticism, with many pundits taking aim at the Lilywhites after their abject display.
The Spurs players have even been accused of hiding and not showing for the ball, thus limiting their options in possession.
Alan Shearer praises Tottenham youngster for his showing
However, Shearer believes that one player who cannot be accused of hiding is Archie Gray, who started alongside Kevin Danso at centre-back at Villa Park.
The Newcastle legend praised the teenager for stepping up during a time of crisis for Spurs and suggested that many of his teammates could learn a lot from him.
Sheared told BBC One (09/02/25): “He’s been one of the positive players though, hasn’t he, if there’s any players that can come out with credit, he’s certainly one of those in really tough times.”
Host Steve Bower then added: “32 games for Spurs, he’s still not played one in his favoured midfield role.”
Shearer responded: “Never shied away though, he’s always wanting the ball, standing up, which is a great sign to come out of this as a better player, no doubt about that.
“If you can take a leaf out of his book actually with him being so young and still standing up to the pressure that they’re under, never ever hiding away.”
Spurs youngsters’ development has been fast-forwarded
There not be a lot of positives to take from what has been a season to forget for Tottenham so far, but one of them is undoubtedly the fact that several of the club’s young talents have gone plenty of game time.
The likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Mikey Moore might not have had too many opportunities if not for the injury crisis. Being exposed to such a high-pressure environment at such a young age will do wonders for their development.
There is no doubt that these players will be better for the experience and in due course, we might look back on these difficult few months as the time that launched what could end up being great careers for these teenagers.
