Tottenham player ratings vs Aston Villa – 1/10 for ‘awful’ senior midfielder
The full-time whistle has sounded between Aston Villa and Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round, meaning it’s time for our player ratings.
Throughout the match, we examined each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Here’s how they got on.
Tottenham’s player ratings vs Aston Villa in the FA Cup
Antonin Kinsky: Kinsky had a nightmare to begin with, as a shot that was straight at him somehow found its way in. He made some big saves that kept us in the game afterward but eventually, it was a goalmouth scramble that led to Villa’s second. In fairness, he made some big saves to keep it from being a cricket score, but his early blunder ultimately cost Tottenham tonight. 5.
Pedro Porro: Porro was caught out of position for Villa’s early opener as always, and Spurs’ right back was tormented for the whole game. Villa’s left flank was toying with him at every opportunity, making his life miserable. 2.
Kevin Danso: Spurs’ new centre-half showed positive signs throughout the match, and often found himself in advanced positions he had no right to be in. He was decent in possession and defensively strong, but it wasn’t enough. He missed a huge chance at the back post to pull one back for Tottenham. 4.5.
Archie Gray: Spurs’ 18-year-old makeshift centre-half struggled tonight. He looked exhausted, understandably, and struggled to cope with the Villa onslaught at times. 4.
Djed Spence: Spence was solid, making challenges when they were necessary and surging forward at will with superb dribbling technique and strength to keep hold of the ball. 6.
Rodrigo Bentancur: Words can’t describe how appalled I am by this man. The most senior player in Tottenham’s midfield tonight was pedestrian and terrible beyond belief. He was run through too easily and apart from the odd decent tackle, he was awful. For Villa’s second goal especially, he didn’t track Rogers and allowed him to stroll leisurely in front of him to tap home. 1.
Lucas Bergvall: Bergvall, a nineteen-year-old, was the midfielder with the most passion and desire wearing a Tottenham shirt tonight. His tackling was strong and his passing play was smart, but he was often overrun at times as it seemed he was in a one-man midfield. 5.
Dejan Kulusevski: Deki was average at best and was ineffective for large parts of the game. His recent form reflects the rest of the team. He actually provided an assist for Tel as it was his cross that found the boot of Tel, but it wasn’t enough to salvage extra time. 4.5.
Mikey Moore: Moore had a quiet first half other than putting the ball on a plate for Son, who missed an absolute sitter. He showed promising signs but was surprisingly subbed for Bissouma at half-time… 4.
Mathys Tel: Tel struggled to make an impact in the first half, and he looked isolated out on the left flank. He showed promising signs throughout the match though, expressing a desire to make something happen but it never really panned out that way for the 19-year-old. Well, it certainly looked that way until the young man latched onto a Kulusevski cross to score his first Tottenham goal! It was actually his first goal of the season altogether. A great moment for him but it was all too little too late for Spurs. 6.
Heung-min Son: Son missed a golden opportunity to level the scoreline after Moore set the ball on a plate, and for the rest of the game his confidence looked shot. He was effectively phased out by the Villa defence, who didn’t allow him a second opportunity. His dribbling was futile and his desire wasn’t there. I’m beginning to feel bad for Son as he’s tarnishing his once-golden reputation with the Spurs fans, and his decline is clear as day. 1.5.
Substitutes:
Yves Bissouma: Biss replaced Moore at half-time. Unsurprisingly, he was awful, and at fault for Villa’s second goal. I’m not sure why Ange persists with the two senior midfielders, because they’re both liabilities. 2.
Pape Sarr: Pape replaced Bentancur but didn’t change the game really. 3.
