How Patrick Mahomes Felt Following Ugly Super Bowl LIX Loss To Eagles
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs caught everyone by surprise in the worst way possible throughout Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
Mahomes and the back-to-back champs took the field at Caesars Superdome in search of making history. No other team in NFL history since the Super Bowl era began in 1966 had ever completed a three-peat, and riding the momentum of a 15-2 regular season and thrilling AFC Championship win over the Buffalo Bills, wasn’t enough. Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles humbled Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift and all of Kansas City in a way only Tom Brady has in the Super Bowl before.
Hurts was named Super Bowl MVP, the Eagles hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy and Mahomes was left owning his defeat.
“That’s why I take ownership of this loss more than probably any other loss more than any in my career, because I put us in the bad spot,” Mahomes said after Kansas City’s 40-22 loss, per Henry McKenna of FOX Sports.
The much-anticipated rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles, which had been hyped up all week long leading into kickoff, wasn’t even close.
The pressure was on Kansas City early. With Brady in the broadcast booth and Kendrick Lamar making history at halftime, Mahomes and the Chiefs trailed Hurts and the Eagles, 24-0, after the first two quarters. That left the reigning champions no other choice but to chase history, but even with Mahomes’ magic, Xavier Worthy’s speed and the “Swifties” watching worldwide, nothing could stop Philadelphia.
Hurts and the underdogs with wings soared past Kansas City’s chase at history as the 26-year-old finished the night 17-for-22 with 221 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Philadelphia finished off a record-setting 18th victory this season, including the playoffs, and the franchise seized its revenge for its Super Bowl LVII loss to Kansas City.
Even Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett got to take the field for a snap in the end.
Mahomes, meanwhile, struggled throughout the final 30 minutes after Kansas City’s scoreless first half. The 29-year-old went 21-for-32 with 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions and endured six sacks, the most Mahomes has ever taken in any game throughout his eight seasons in the NFL.
Even that doesn’t speak to how ugly, lopsided and unbearable of a sight Kansas City’s performance was.
However, Kelce’s swift exit from Caesars Superdome better summarized how underserving the Chiefs were at etching their names where no other team had before. Kelce’s mediocrity tallied 39 yards off four receptions without a single trip to the endzone — giving the “Swifties” nothing to celebrate.
Kansas City will aim to revive its dynasty next season, while Hurts and the Eagles will kick off the party in Philadelphia.
The Eagles are now two-time Super Bowl champions.
