How Patrick Mahomes Addressed Potential Travis Kelce Retirement
Travis Kelce simply did not look like the dominant tight end that stands among the greats in NFL history.
The veteran had just four catches for 39 yards in a brutal Super Bowl LIX loss for the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and the entire Kansas City offense had no answer for a ferocious Philadelphia defense that dominated the championship atmosphere.
Kelce just finished his age-35 season and clearly isn’t the 1,000-yard pass-catcher he built his career on. If the three-time champion decides that’s enough for his career, his quarterback believes that’s up to him.
“He’ll make that decision on his own,” Mahomes told reporters after the loss, per FOX Sports’ Henry McKenna. “He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL. It’s been such a joy, not just for me to work with, but for people to watch. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. He always make big plays in this biggest moments. It’s just if he wants to put in that grind. It’s grind to go out there and play 20 games and get to the Super Bowl.”
Mahomes believes Kelce is destined to be a first-ball Hall of Famer. The question remains if Kelce will return to solidify a special resume further.
“I know he still has a love for the game,” Mahomes added. “He’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own. He knows he’ll come back here with open arms. We love that guy, not only for the football player but for the person he is every single day.”
