Tottenham expected to prioritise signing a striker in the summer

Spurs managed to secure the services of Mathys Tel on transfer deadline day, but they might go looking for more firepower in the summer, with Richarlison potentially on his way out.

This was the information reported by The Athletic, who claimed on Tuesday that Tottenham will prioritise signing an elite forward in the summer to take the goalscoring burden off Dominic Solanke‘s shoulders.

The North London club have been backed to make a move for one young striker, who is thriving in his debut Premier League season, and it turns out that Walcott is a major fan of the player.

Theo Walcott likens Liam Delap to Harry Kane

The player in question is Ipswich youngster Liam Delap, who has been outstanding since swapping the Etihad Stadium for Portman Road last summer.

The 21-year-old, who has scored nine goals and picked up two assists in his debut PL season so far, was reportedly the subject of interest from Tottenham during the January window.

Over recent days, some sources have claimed that Spurs could go head-to-head with Chelsea for the centre-forward in the summer, and that Postecoglou’s men are hopeful of winning the race.

Walcott is certainly a big fan of Delap, admitting that the Ipswich man reminds him of Kane.

The former Arsenal man told BBC: “Liam Delap I believe he’s an old-school number nine, a bit similar to Harry Kane. He always is a threat in behind, he causes defenders all sorts of problems, he likes to work hard and gets a lot of goals.

“Put him in a team, no disrespect to Ipswich, but put him in a team that provides a lot more chances, he’s going to have a very, very successful career.”

Will Tottenham sign a pure number nine like Liam Delap?

Liam Delap’s age and his technical profile make him a good fit for Tottenham, but the big question is whether Postecoglou would want to add an out-and-out number nine to his squad.

The Australian appears to prefer versatile forwards who can operate across the frontline. Tottenham might be reluctant to spend a big fee on a player who can only rotate with Solanke or be an understudy to the England striker.
