Tottenham or Chelsea – Journalist predicts who who Marc Guehi will join
Tottenham could revisit Marc Guehi’s pursuit in the summer after winter deadline day drama, but with other clubs lurking, a bidding war seems certain. Journalist Dean Jones has now shared the centre-backs most likely destination.
Tottenham’s late push for defensive reinforcement
Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer window was far from quiet, with new signings bringing excitement to North London. Ange Postecoglou’s side added some key players to bolster their squad, but there was one position that remained unresolved as the window slammed shut.
The club made a serious effort to sign another centre-back on deadline day after completing the signing of Kevin Danso. Axel Disasi was a name linked earlier in the window, but attention soon turned to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
A substantial bid of £70m was reportedly tabled in the final hours of the window, signalling Spurs’ determination to secure the 24-year-old England international.
However, despite their best efforts, Tottenham were unable to complete the deal. The failed attempt to sign Guehi has left many wondering whether this was just a temporary setback or if Spurs could return for him when the summer window opens.
Tottenham and Chelsea both like Marc Guehi
Speaking on Market Madness, journalist Dean Jones shared his insight into the situation and gave his take on Marc Guehi’s future.
He revealed that Tottenham’s late bid for the Crystal Palace defender came as a surprise and hinted that Chelsea might be in pole position to secure the player next summer.
He said: “I had some scepticism when I first saw they went in for him. I’d heard nothing about it. At Tottenham, I have some reasonable contacts, but it wasn’t something I’d heard before all of this,” Jones said.
“They probably sensed that this was their big chance to go and do it because the likelihood is that Marc Guehi would choose to go to Chelsea, I’ve heard that for a long time now, and that will probably still be the case if Guehi leaves Crystal Palace at the end of the season then that’s where he ends up.”
What Tottenham’s summer prospects could look like
There is still a long way to go before the summer transfer window opens, and much could change between now and then.
Tottenham’s chances of landing Marc Guehi might hinge on several key factors, most notably their qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Should Tottenham secure a spot in Europe’s top competition— through an impressive Europa League campaign—their ability to attract top players will be significantly enhanced.
For Guehi, the prospect of playing in the Champions League could tilt the scales in favour of a move to North London.
However, the English defender seems to hold Chelsea dear to his heart as he said the following after his departure in 2021: “It hurt a lot just because I was there for such a long time. It’s such a different feeling leaving there and not going back to where you’ve been for so long. But in order to grow, sometimes you have to take the hard choice and take the hard path sometimes,”(Skysports)
