Postecoglou says two Spurs stars have stepped up in pursuit of trophies
Ange Postecoglou admits that Heung-min Son and Ben Davies, who are both expected to play key roles in Spurs’ semifinal at Anfield this evening, will love nothing more than to add a trophy to their already exceptional legacy at the North London club.
Postecoglou needs old Spurs heads to step up
With the Spurs squad still ravaged by injuries, several teenagers are once again expected to start in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal at Anfield this evening.
They will have to be guided by the experienced heads surrounding them, and they do not come more experienced than Heung-min Son and Ben Davies, who are in their tenth seasons at the club.
The South Korean and the Welshman have played in plenty of semifinal clashes over the last decade but do not have a trophy to show for their efforts, which is something Postecoglou believes they will be motivated to change.
Ange Postecoglou on Spurs duo Ben Davies and Heung-min Son
So far this season, Son‘s performances have not lived up to the high standards he has set for himself, but the forward has still managed 10 goals and eight assists across all competitions, which shows that people should think twice about writing him off just yet.
Postecoglou has praised the 32-year-old, pointing out that he has had to play every game without any rest, which has taken a physical and mental toll on his captain.
The Tottenham head coach also spoke highly of the way Davies has stepped up and admitted that the pair are driven to lift their first piece of silverware at N17.
Postecoglou told Football.London: “Sonny’s been outstanding for us. I’ve said before with Sonny, the extremes we’ve had to put on him this year, it’d be tough for anyone to carry the load he has both from a physical perspective, a mental perspective. I think he was unbelievable against Brentford at the weekend but that’s because he only played 45 minutes on Thursday night.
“Now we haven’t been able to do that. If we had the opportunity to give him the rest he needs to be at his best I think we would have seen it, but I think he’s got a real clear focus in his eye that he senses an opportunity for us as a football club, not just for himself, to have success this year.
“Ben Davies is another one who’s really stepped up in recent times. Two guys who have been at this club for a long time and understand what success will do for this club.
“Not just for them personally, which should be a drive, because for Sonny everything he’s done for the club it would be more than fitting for him to get some trophies to add to what already is his status at this club. Both of them realise what it means for the club, more importantly, and he’s going to be a part of us hopefully having success.”
Postecoglou insists trophy drought is not a burden for players
It has been 17 years since Tottenham last lifted a trophy and with each passing year, the pressure seems to grow on the players.
Son and Davies certainly understand the desperation at the club for a trophy, but Postecoglou insists neither the experienced pair nor any of the others in the squad are burdened by the club’s trophy record.
The Tottenham boss added: “I don’t sense with Sonny in particular or with Ben that there’s any burden on them or they feel like we’re going to fall short or there’s something missing. They’re as optimistic as anyone.
“And for the other guys, whatever this club’s been through over the last 14 or 15 years trying to get a trophy, they’ve not been part of it so don’t need to feel burdened. They can just go out there and try and change that.”
