Patriots Rumors: Drake Maye Was ‘Rooting’ For This Coaching Hire

Drake Maye’s rookie season was tumultuous, and the Patriots quarterback might have preferred change for his sophomore season.

Mike Vrabel overhauled his New England staff except for a few assistants. One of the notable changes for the new Patriots head coach was hiring Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator. The retread hire received mixed reviews and was the target of speculation that Robert Kraft and ownership participated in the hiring process.

Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti were the leaders in that idea and wanted clearer answers when NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport appeared on their radio show Wednesday. The NFL insider surprised the 98.5 The Sports Hub hosts by revealing that Maye was “rooting” for the Patriots to hire McDaniels.

Maye defended former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt multiple times during the 2024 season. However, Rapoport noted that the 22-year-old wanted to see more from the offense and was excited about what McDaniels could bring.

Vrabel reportedly might have preferred other offensive coordinator candidates. However, multiple reports indicated that the final decision came down to the 2021 Coach of the Year without any influence from the Krafts.

Maye and Vrabel’s support of the McDaniels hire might not be enough to sway Felger and Massarotti, though.
